The grip lets the user grasp the stocking or sleeve, pull it up the limb, and smooth it into an even position without the fabric sliding through bare fingers.
The gloves also protect the garment during application. Fingernails, rings, and chapped skin catch and tear compression fabric, and a run in a compression stocking ends its useful life. The smooth grip surface distributes force across the fabric instead of concentrating it at a fingertip.
