A York handle is a molded grip that positions the hand directly above the cane shaft. Most traditional handles — a derby, a crook, a tourist hook — place the hand slightly forward of the shaft, so weight travels down at an angle. A York handle stacks the load vertically instead.
The top surface is contoured rather than flat, with raised ends front and back. Those raised ends do the quiet work: they keep the hand from creeping forward as you walk and give the palm something to settle into, so you aren’t constantly regripping.
Handles concentrate pressure differently, and that becomes obvious over distance. A narrow round handle loads a small area of the palm. The York’s broader molded surface spreads that same weight across more of the hand.
The centered hand position also means less wrist angle. When the handle sits forward of the shaft, the wrist compensates on every step. Stacking the hand over the shaft removes that compensation, which is why people who use a cane heavily — not for occasional balance, but for genuine weight-bearing — often prefer this shape.
