A waterproof cast cover is a flexible sleeve that seals against the skin and keeps water out of a cast, bandage, or dressing while you shower. You slide it on over the c
ast, the elastic opening seals above it, and you bathe normally instead of wrapping the limb in a trash bag and hoping for the best.
We stock arm and leg covers in adult sizes at our West Los Angeles showroom. They are reusable, so one cover typically lasts the length of a recovery.
Arm covers come in two lengths. A short version covers the hand, wrist, and forearm — the right choice for a wrist fracture or a below-elbow cast. A full-length version runs up past the elbow to the upper arm for casts and dressings that extend higher.
Measure the limb about two inches above the top of the cast and pick the length that clears it. If the seal sits on the cast itself instead of on bare skin, water gets in.
Leg covers also come in two lengths. A half-leg cover fits foot, ankle, and calf injuries. A full-leg cover extends to the thigh for knee casts, post-surgical knee dressings, and longer immobilizers.
Most leg covers have a textured or non-slip sole, which matters more than it sounds — a smooth plastic bottom on a wet shower floor is a fall risk.
Two measurements decide the size: the length from the fingertips or heel to two inches above the cast, and the circumference of the limb at that same point. Choose a cover that clears both. A cover that is too tight is uncomfortable and hard to get on; one that is too loose will not hold a seal.
Bring your measurements in, or come by and our staff will help you size it in person.
After each use, wipe the cover down with a towel and let it air dry fully before storing it. The elastic seal is the part that wears out, so avoid stretching it further than you need to when putting the cover on and taking it off.
Follow your doctor’s instructions about getting the cast or dressing wet. A cover keeps water out during a normal shower; it is not intended for swimming or submersion unless the manufacturer states otherwise.
