The Littmann Classic III is the Littmann line’s everyday workhorse, with a tunable diaphragm on both the adult and pediatric sides of the chestpiece. It is built for general physical assessment and is the most popular Littmann among nurses and nursing students. Dual-sided, 5-year warranty.

Both sides of the chestpiece have a tunable diaphragm. Light pressure brings out low-frequency sounds; firm pressure brings out high-frequency sounds. You change frequency by changing pressure, without lifting or flipping the chestpiece. The manufacturer states the Classic III carries lower-frequency sounds more loudly than other stethoscopes in its class.
The two-sided chestpiece has a larger adult side (1.7″) and a smaller pediatric side (1.3″). Rotate the central spline to switch sides — a recessed indicator shows which side is active. The pediatric side converts to a traditional open bell by removing the single-piece diaphragm and fitting the included non-chill sleeve.
The next-generation single-lumen tubing resists skin oils and alcohol and holds its shape after folding into a pocket. The headset is aerospace-grade aluminum alloy with angled ear tubes and snap-tight, soft-sealing eartips. The garment carries a 5-year warranty. It is latex-free.
The Classic III sits in the middle of the Littmann line. It gives more than the entry-level Lightweight II SE — dual tunable diaphragms and a full pediatric side — without the dual-lumen critical-care build of the Cardiology IV. That makes it the standard choice for nurses, nursing students, and general practice clinicians doing everyday physical assessment in non-critical settings.
